Fotolane stores the original and renders every variant on demand. Size, crop, quality and format live in the URL — no build step, no asset pipeline, no second copy to keep in sync.
Width, height, fit, quality and output format are read from the path. Unknown parameters are ignored rather than served as an error, so a typo never blanks a page.
AVIF and WebP go to clients that accept them, JPEG to everyone else. The original is kept untouched and can always be fetched back.
Rendered variants are cached at regional edges. A cold variant is produced once; after that the origin is not touched again until the cache expires.
